Question
I was in Scanton PA this past weekend.
On Saturday August 26, 2006 at about 3 AM Lightening hit near to the hotel we were staying in. We heard a load bang. It was raining and there was lots of water accumulation.
It set off the fire alarms in the hotel but
It also UNLOCKED all the automatic car door locks for any vehicle parked in the parking lot.
Have you ever heard of lightening unlocking car doors? Why would this happen?
Answer
Dear Pat:
I have not heard of lightning unlocking car locks, but it is very possible. If lightning hits an area directly it wil send branches of lightning down over an area. Lightning often creates an electric field around an area it affects. This electric field can become very strong for a split second so that all electronic equipment nearby including the electronic locking system in a car can be altered. I believe most locking mechanisms in a car send out a signal that is altered when you press a remote control. This causes the system to unlock the vehicle. It sounds like the lightning generated just the right kind of signal to mimic your remote. You should have your locking mechanism checked out by an auto mechanic just to be on the safe side.
